Raid the North Championship
Canadian Ecology Centre (Mattawa, Ontario)

September 19 - 21, 2003

The 'Golden Fleece'

Raid the North is Canada’s Ultimate Adventure Race Series, and each first place team from the series’ races – HOPE, PARRY SOUND, STONEHAM, KIMBERLEY, and Alberta’s acclaimed Full Moon in June, earns the right, by racing hardest and fastest, to wear the race winner’s yellow competitor’s bibs. The ‘Golden Fleece’ bibs are symbolic of these teams effort and are an automatic entry into the prestigious 2 ½ day Raid the North Championship race, to take place in Mattawa, ON, Sept. 19.

The Rest of the Best, the second and third place teams from each race will also be awarded their own unique blue or red competitor’s bibs to be worn in the Championship race, each bib will serve as that team’s number for the race and are marked with the event that they won them in.

Be online at midnight September 18th for our webcast of the one event that will decide who the top 24-36 hour teams in Canada are. Can Canada’s fastest adventure racers defend their right to wear the bibs they fought to win? On the line for is a cash purse of over $15,000 CDN and the title of Raid the North Champions!

The Championship race is more challenging than a 24-36 hour Raid the North both mentally and physically. While the racecourse is not significantly longer in distance, technical skill, commitment, and navigation decisions will put your team to the test. This is what makes this 2 1/2 day race a great stepping stone to expedition-length adventure races.

Any team is invited to compete in this event but remember, Gold, Red or Blue entry bibs can be won at each of the remaining Raid the North races in 2003. See you there!

About the Canadian Ecology Centre

Located just north of Algonquin Provincial Park near Mattawa, Ontario, the Canadian Ecology Centre was created to promote ecological learning and eco-tourism - "A place of mutual discovery where the ecologically concerned and the natural resource sector come together for the benefit of the forest".

The Canadian Ecology Centre is best described as a learning environment where technology and modern thinking is embraced in order to forge a productive and symbiotic relationship among the forest industry, and those who wish to enjoy Canada's wilds. The activities offered at the CEC are as unique as they are educational:

  • Educational paddling journey in Voyageur canoes
  • Mountain biking to an abandoned Mica Mine
  • Interpretive hiking where you learn all about the forest ecology
  • Using night vision monoculars to see the forest like never before
  • Using a parabolic sound dish and headset to listen to the wetlands
  • Howl back and forth with nearby wolf packs

Each accommodation cabin is wired to the internet and the CEC also offers a 12-station computer lab, GPS units, topographic map creation, and a host of other services and activities in-line with their technological approach to resource sustainability.
